A wonderful little hole in the wall restaurant on Brooklyn’s eclectic 7th Avenue, Chiles Y Chocolate gets a thumbs up in my book!!!
I have walked by this little place so many times and always wanted to try it but am usually in the neighborhood when I don’t have time to stop. I FINALLY had time to stop by last week. Chocolate and chiles are two ingredients used together in much of Mexican cuisine, like mole sauce and hot chocolate.
The first time I had hot chocolate that included chile was at the NYC Chocolate Show a few years ago. The first time I had it I was hooked. It does not taste peppery spicy but just gives the hot chocolate that extra kick. I bought a container of the hot chocolate mix and since then I only buy brands that have chiles listed as one of the ingredients. I was not in the mood for hot chocolate, but I told my cousin who was with me to order it at Chiles Y Chocolate, so she listened to my “good advice” and got it. She keeps on telling me that her lips are burning. I thought that was strange so I took a sip of hers and realized they had put chile pepper on the rim of the mug just like when they put salt on the rim of Margarita glasses – a little too intense for me. Unless you are a true chile aficionado, I would avoid the hot chocolate or just order it without the chile rim.
But the food is fantastic and authentic!! – You are greeted with warm sweet bread. The tacos are real Mexican tacos – not the crispy shells which no one in Mexico eats. The fried red snapper with mango, beans and topped with guacamole is the star of the menu – perfectly seasoned and wonderful with a side order of perfectly grilled chorizo.
Order it with Aguas Fresca for a unique beverage, specific to Mexico. Sweet, cool and refreshing!!!
For affordable, authentic, delicious Mexican cuisine – take the Q train to 7th Avenue and enjoy a great lunch at Chiles Y Chocolate. When you are finished you can do some shopping at the great little boutiques available on 7th avenue. The Tibetan boutique is great for unusual gifts!!!
Try Chiles Y Chocolate and please post your feedback!!!
